Racism and Stereotypes in Advertising


We spoke in class about Racism in the media, and I chose this video because you can see with this example the stereotypes and images that we have in our head, or images that the media puts in our minds.  There are some positive and some negative images.

  1. Nice find! It's shocking how the media tries to put racism and stereotyping in advertisements. The fact that advertisements are printed with racist or stereotypical undertones shows that stereotypes and racism are still prevalent in our everyday thinking in today's society, which is really sad.

  2. I think one of the things we've been learning in class is that what we generally call "stereotypes" are an element of what Goldberg calls "racial knowledge". If you look at some of the images in the video, we can see that there are ways in which black-white media representations differ - and these differences produce the very frames we bring to bear in reading them. It seems that there are themes in these images, the video producer identifies some of these.

  3. This is a great clip! I found an example of these types of ads myself, Nivea For Men published them and the one was entitled "Re-Civilize Yourself", featuring an african american man literally throwing away his former self. It can be found on google, along with much of the media attention they recieved! The partner ad features a white man in a similar situation with a very different catch phrase. The fact these companies that put these ads out and then have to recall them says a lot about the advertising standards and the media in general. If the mass media has the ability to make people aware of all of the systematic racism out there and put a stop to it, couldn't it be used on a larger scale to try and overcome racism as a whole?
